What is art? Does it matter? Should it be beautiful? Does it need to be good? And what is ‘good’ anyway? These are some of the questions that the philosophy of art tries to answer. This lecture gives an introduction to these questions by considering a series of objects and discussing how they fit into the philosophical discussions surrounding art. As we go through each piece, we will look at whether we as a group feel that they should count as a work of art, where they fit in relation to some of the main philosophical theories pertaining to art and what they indicate about the nature of art. Some of the pieces will be well known and established works of art and some will be more challenging to our conception of how we perceive art. Understanding the philosophy of art helps us to understand the value and significance of art. The arts and humanities are currently an underfunded and undervalued aspects of our education and culture. By having a deeper understanding of the ideas and concepts behind the arts, we are better able to defend and promote the arts. This lecture will last for approximately an hour and a half to allow time for cake and discussion. Tickets: £10 per ticket, £5 for Cloth Road Members
